University Directories Launches Online Recruiting Methods for 2010
Chapel Hill, NC – Given the growing popularity of its summer internships, along with a significant increase in represented markets in 2010, University Directories (UD) has been forced to be creative in their recruiting efforts this spring. The company has chosen to turn to a venue that their potential associates are most familiar with: the internet.
Each summer, University Directories hires sales and marketing interns in over 250 markets across the United States. In total, they hire an average of 700 students each year, though this number is projected to reach over 800 individuals for the summer of 2010.
While Regional Sales Managers for UD spend each spring focused on recruiting students, on-campus events often conflict between universities within their regions. This, combined with the increased challenges and expenses associated with travel, has made it difficult for them in recent years to interview all candidates in person.
In the past, recruiters were limited to conducting interviews via phone with candidates they could not meet face-to-face, but with the growing popularity and ease of online recruiting, the company made the move this year to utilize the web service “Green Interview,” powered by InterviewStream.com.
“Our 24 recruiters can only be on one campus each day during recruitment. We have interest and opportunities in just about every corner of the United States. Interview Stream gives us a presence on every campus, even when we may not physically be able to visit,” says John O’Brien, President of UD.
After reviewing a resume, recruiters using Green Interview can immediately invite a qualified candidate via email to participate in the interview. For students, the interview only requires a webcam, a device many students and most university career centers already have. Students simply follow a link to the Green Interview site and then record their responses to pre-recorded sets of questions created and filmed by University Directories recruiters.
Once completed, company administrators can access interviews online through their accounts and can organize and rate the interviews.
“Given the fact that so many recruiting events have overlapping dates and span over a large geographic area throughout my region, I am simply not able to meet every qualified candidate in person. Green Interview gives me access to candidates’ nonverbal cues and those “first impressions” that I can miss with just a phone interview,” says Kristen Wisdorf, Regional Manager for the Northland Region.
UD’s Regional Managers can now use Green Interview as a way to pre-qualify any candidates they cannot meet in person. The system allows them to preview many more candidates through a brief interview, and then select the most qualified candidates for subsequent phone or in-person interviews.
“I am able to increase my candidate pool by conducting multiple Green Interviews per day, in conjunction with my on-campus recruiting efforts. I have already been able to meet top-notch students this season through the use of Green Interview,” Wisdorf says.
The company sees online recruiting as a tool that will be exceedingly prevalent for recruiting in the years to come, especially as the company continues to grow and expand into new markets. Ultimately, that growth will require more interns and lead to even more campuses to recruit. The good news for UD is that services
like Green Interview are perfect recruiting strategies for their target demographic of interns.
“University Directories is a unique and exciting company for InterviewStream to partner with. No other company has mastered the ability to connect with students quite like UD. Using InterviewStream’s remote interviewing platform has all but eliminated travel costs while providing greater candidate interaction earlier in the process than ever before. UD’s commitment to knowing their audience has once again been affirmed by their adoption of new age recruitment tools like Green Interview,” says Miles Munz, Co-Founder of InterviewStream.
